Teen Straight Talk is headquartered in Vienna, Ohio. Since 1989, TST has passionately educated children, teens, and adults regarding the importance of abstinence, as a lifestyle choice. Prime focus is placed on the personal value and worth of every individual along with goal-setting; making decisions that are life-enhancing; and exploring consequences and the need for accountability for one’s actions and choices. Emphasis is also placed on the optimal physical, emotional, social, relational, financial and spiritual health benefits associated with avoiding risk.
Teen Straight Talk began serving the Spartanburg, County community through Women’s conferences. After viewing the TST educational tool and its impact, a local community leader suggested establishing an extension within our area. The Spartanburg, South Carolina branch was incorporated in May 2002 and received its non-profit status in August of 2002. Through one-on-one consultations, classroom settings, seminars, conferences and special events, we continue to offer the message of abstinence, risk-avoidance, to audiences in our community and beyond. Trained, certified TST Coordinators serve as volunteer presenters. They include educators, business people, and, church leaders. Youth are trained to serve as Peer Educators. Affiliations include ASCEND and The Medical Institute for sexual Health.
Vilma Allen, Director and Lead Risk-Avoidance Educator is nationally certified as a Sexual Risk-Avoidance Specialist through the Ascend organization, formerly, the National Abstinence Education Association. She is a graduate of Knoxville College; a graduate of Moody Bible Institute's Lay-Counseling Program through the North Coast Family Foundation; and graduate of the Spartanburg County Foundation's Grassroots Institute.
The newly established Spartanburg branch began its service at The Tobias Hartwell Campus of Learners where students participated in a six-week course study. The “Talks” Mentoring program was implemented for boys and girls 11-17 years of age using the “Talks My Mother, and, Talks My Father Never Had With Me” curriculum for three public housing communities. This program provides one example of reaching our youth as a community service provider.
Additional program examples include operating a Language-In-Arts Center at the Louvenia Barksdale Apartments public housing community. Partnership with the local Salvation Army Community Center, included providing risk-avoidance education for Middle School students along with crafts. Parent workshops were also conducted. The TST Dream Girl’s Club was established at the Cammie Clagett housing community. The program ran for nine months and provided crafts; mentoring; tutoring, along with lessons in etiquette and financial literacy. The club activities included a field trip to The Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina.
Currently, in partnership with Born Anew Baptist Church, Teen Straight Talk conducts presentations for the Annual Pure Heart Purity Conference each third weekend in June. The 2018 conference will be its 10 year anniversary. TST Spartanburg also serves as an exhibitor for special events. Please feel free to contact us.
